Mysterious Animals
Fuller E. THE GREAT AUK - THE EXTINCTION OF THE ORIGINAL PENQUIN Bunker Hill 2003 Hb 47pp Well illustrated in b&w and colour M £4.  Garefowls, Penquins of the North, Riesenalks, Apponaths, Great Auks - all these were names for a sea bird whose extinction was entirely the work of humankind.  The birds' existence ended on the morning of the third day of June 1844, when the last recorded great auks were killed by three fishermen on the island of Eldey, a few miles south of Iceland in the North Atlantic Ocean.  For thousands of years, until not so long before that fateful day, great auks swam the Atlantic in their millions and flocked to their breeding grounds from Newfoundland in the west to Iceland and the Outer Hebrides in the east.  Whole colonies at a time were hunted to death for their meat, feathers, and fat by sailors and fishermen from Europe and the Americas.  Since the total vanishing of the species, the great auk has become an icon of extinction, alongside the dodo, the passenger pigeon, and the moa.  More highly prized as a trophy than any other extinct bird, all its attributes - from its eggs to the oral history of its demise - were, until fairly recently, voraciously collected.  Its protean appearance in almost every artistic and visual form, from cigarette boxes to bronze and marble statues, has immortalized one of the most tragic main-made extinctions.  The author is a world-renowned authority on extinct birds and the author of many books concerned with extinction and conservation.

Mind Body and Spirit
Arithanto and Jeremy  A PAGAN CHILDS' A B C  On front cover small area of coffee(?) damaged Brochure 1988 Drawings Card covers G 50p.  The authors of this book accept that childrens' education is an emotive issue, particularly where "fringe" issues are concerned and that fringe spiritual teachings are liable to give some people apoplexy.  This is a very special book for very special children.  If your Mum or Dad have bought it for you it is because they want you to know about things that only a few people know about.  The book is aimed at children who have already learnt their basic alphabet - it is not a primary learning tool. We believe that it is almost unique in this country, a fact that we find regrettable .  We hope that you and your children will find it fun and useful.  In the wider sense we hope that it will lead to a greater understanding and acceptance of Paganism and the realisation that it is not something evil to be hounded but that it is a faith every bit as viable and living as any other.
