Mackal R.P. THE MONSTERS OF LOCH NESS Futura 1976 Pb 387pp Illus G+ £6.50. Alive after 50 million years: the first complete scientific study and its startling conclusions. The author has researched and taught for 20 years in the biological science division at the University of Chicago. His research projects and publications - first to successfully isolate infectious double-stranded bacteriophage DNA and infect sphereoplasts in a hypotonic environment, successful destruction of biological activity of DNA by denaturation and restoration of infectivity by renaturation etc are impressive testimony that he is a thoroughly experienced research scientist. Looking at case studies from America and Asia, evidence from footprints, natural history and fossils, Napier attempts to find factual material from the various myths and legends which abound.

At the beginning of the 20th century both scientists and layman alike appear to have been confident that the world had been thoroughly explored and most of its creatures named and documented. Since 1901, however, a whole host of new and rediscovered creatures has turned up to contradict these views, among them a 7-foot long forest hog, a gigantic dragon, a fish resurrected from 64 million years extinction, a megamouth shark, a monster sized earwig and deep sea worms over 8 feet long.
