Bord J & C ALIEN ANIMALS Panther 1985 (Revised Edition) Pb 196pp Photographs Pages browning G-VG £10. All over the world there are reports of animals - of monsters - that just shouldn't be there.  Some are monsters reported in lakes, some are big hairy monsters like the yeti, some are giant black dogs; some are birdmen.  But they have one thing in common.  They are not normal animals.  They do not behave like normal animals.  They are Alien Animals.  In this thorough investigation of the "alien animal" phenomenon, eyewitness reports of extraordinary creatures are combined with theories that may help to explain what they are - and where they have come from.
Burton R.  ANIMAL SENSES  David & Charles 1973 Hb 173pp Well illus Dw VG £9. This book examines the ways in which animals make use of their senses to regulate their lives, to find food, mates and shelter, or to escape from their enemies.  Full examples are given in this book of the uses of different sense organs and their structure and working are described.  Experiments used by scientists in the study are introduced, showing the problems involved.  New theories are included, some of which show that apparently complex behaviour appearing to require considerable intelligence is controlled by a simple mechanism.
Costello P. THE MAGIC ZOO - THE NATURAL HISTORY OF FABULOUS ANIMALS Sphere Pb 1979 1st Ed 182pp illus G+ £7. This is an engrossing, enchanting and highly readable book at the imaginary beasts that roam the mind of Man. Fabulous animals and birds have fascinated and intrigued men from the earliest times: the Greeks had their centaurs and satyrs, the Chinese their Kai-Lin and Feng Wang and today we have our Yeti and the Loch Ness Monster.  But is there any truth in the myths? Do real animals or real animal behaviour lurk behind the legends?  The author looks at the whole range of strange animals from the seemingly imaginary creatures of prehistoric art such as the Lascaux Beast, through classical myth and the medieval bestiaries, through vampires and werewolves to modern monsters like the sea serpent, exploring the possibility that real creatures were the basis of the legends. UNCOMMON

Shuker Dr K.P.N. THE LOST ARK HarperCollins 1993 1st Ed Hb 264pp Lavishly Illus in colour/b&w Dw VG+ £15.  New and Rediscovered Animals of the 20th century.  Forward by Gerald Durrell.  At the beginning of the 20th century both scientists and layman alike appear to have been confident that the world had been thoroughly explored and most of its creatures named and documented.  Since 1901, however, a whole host of new and rediscovered creatures has turned up to contradict these views, among them a 7-foot long forest hog, a gigantic dragon, a fish resurrected from 64 million years extinction, a megamouth shark, a monster sized earwig and deep sea worms over 8 feet long.  This is the first book to be devoted to the spectacular zoological discoveries and equally amazing rediscoveries of the twentieth century and it contains the only comprehensive collection of photographs of these species ever published.  It is a fascinating and encouraging book that provides good reason for believing that our world still holds many more surprises in store.
Tchernine O. THE SNOWMAN AND COMPANY Hale 1961 1st GB Ed Hb 167pp Illus Dw VG £20. For 40 years the Abominable Snowman has been a subject for speculation, both serious and light hearted.  Circumstantial evidence for the existence on the high regions of the Himalayas of some sort of remarkable creature, possibly so far unknown to science, has been persistently coming to light since "the Abominable Snowman" (or Yeti, as the local inhabitants call it) was first given this eye catching name in 1921.  The authoress's research has revealed that stories about the Snowman go back much further than was suspected, the first British writer to mention it published his report a century before modern publicity made the creature widely known.  The authoress also discovered evidence of similar living things in other parts of the world hence the "and Company" of this book's title which, when viewed together, create a remarkable pattern of mystery.
