Burton R. ANIMAL SENSES David & Charles 1973 Hb 173pp Well illus Dw VG £3. This book examines the ways in which animals make use of their senses to regulate their lives, to find food, mates and shelter, or to escape from their enemies. Full examples are given in this book of the uses of different sense organs and their structure and working are described. Experiments used by scientists in the study are introduced, showing the problems involved. New theories are included, some of which show that apparently complex behaviour appearing to require considerable intelligence is controlled by a simple mechanism.

Harmsworth A.G. LOCH NESS THE MONSTER Peter Gray (Scotland) Ltd 1985 Booklet 30pp b&w & colour photographs slight creases on front cover and slight foxing on first page o/w G+ £3.50. In 1979 the author with the support and help of research groups and individuals from both sides of the Atlantic, he researched and co-founded the Official Loch Ness Monster Exhibition at Drumnadrochit. During the first year of operation Mr Harmsworth learned a great deal more about the subject, most if it after going into print with an earlier edition of this booklet called Mysterious Monsters of Loch Ness. It came to pass that he had made a number of erroneous deductions and statements. With the flood of information on the monster, past and present, arriving on my desk, I quickly began to see that even some of the better pieces of evidence were less reliable that they seemed initially. I now know that I should have been far more careful in my initial research of the subject as I had misled by the omission of relevant facts crucial to the interpretation of much of the evidence. With the aim of ensuring that this publication does not become outdated as quickly as the last, I have restricted the text to known facts and generalisations although I have tried to show some of the reasoning behind the various identity theories. The exhibition has a more comprehensive display than can be produced in any book. It is also easy , though not inexpensive, to update it to keep abreast of current activities in the loch. Visitors to the exhibition praise its unbiased approach and are surprised at the educational content, covering the loch as a habitat, its fish and invertebrate populations as well as explaining the complexities of sonar interpretation to the layman. The mystery at Loch Ness goes far deeper than you can ever imagine.

Linden E. THE PARROTT'S LAMENT Souvenir 2000 1st GB Ed Hb 204pp Dw M £16. True and often fascinating tales of animal intrigue, intelligence and ingenuity.
Mackal R.P. THE MONSTERS OF LOCH NESS Futura 1976 Pb 387pp Illus G+ £5. Alive after 50 million years: the first complete scientific study and its startling conclusions. The author has researched and taught for 20 years in the biological science division at the University of Chicago. His research projects and publications - first to successfully isolate infectious double-stranded bacteriophage DNA and infect sphereoplasts in a hypotonic environment, successful destruction of biological activity of DNA by denaturation and restoration of infectivity by renaturation etc are impressive testimony that he is a thoroughly experienced research scientist. But of equal import for the Loch Ness investigation is Mackal's Edison-like quality; he sees the previously unseen, he gives a fruitful twist to an ordinary fact, and he imaginatively invents equipment he needs for new jobs.
McEwan G.J. SEA SERPENTS, SAILORS AND SCEPTICS RKP Hb 1978 1st Ed 124pp Illus Dw VG+ £8. An excellent work looking at all aspects of the sea serpent. Includes a useful chronological table of sightings from 1660s until 1976.
Picknett L. THE LOCH NESS MONSTER Pitkin 1993 Booklet 20pp colour & b&w photographs G+ £3.50. For nearly 1,500 years the legend of the Loch Ness Monster has persisted. That there was "something strange in the loch" was accepted as one of life's mysteries by local inhabitants until, in the early 1930s, a Harley Street surgeon took the first photograph of "Nessie". Since then the elusive Monster has been pursued by big game hunters, newspapermen, scientists and of course the inevitable hoaxers. What are we to make of the evidence: of the photographs and sonar "contacts", of the film and video tapes, and of the testimony of the priest who saw "Nessie" face to face? This Guide examines the facts.
Shuker Dr K.P.N. THE LOST ARK HarperCollins 1993 1st Ed Hb 264pp Lavishly Illus in colour/b&w Dw VG+ £6. New and Rediscovered Animals of the 20th century. Forward by Gerald Durrell. At the beginning of the 20th century both scientists and layman alike appear to have been confident that the world had been thoroughly explored and most of its creatures named and documented. Since 1901, however, a whole host of new and rediscovered creatures has turned up to contradict these views, among them a 7-foot long forest hog, a gigantic dragon, a fish resurrected from 64 million years extinction, a megamouth shark, a monster sized earwig and deep sea worms over 8 feet long. This is the first book to be devoted to the spectacular zoological discoveries and equally amazing rediscoveries of the twentieth century and it contains the only comprehensive collection of photographs of these species ever published. It is a fascinating and encouraging book that provides good reason for believing that our world still holds many more surprises in store.
The Unexplained Volume 4 - CREATURES FROM ELSEWHERE - Editor Peter Brookesmith Orbis 1984 Pb 94pp Larger format Well illus in colour/b&w VG £6. There are two animals that are not to be found in any zoo but that must be known to almost everyone in the Western world: the Loch Ness monster and the bigfoot (or yeti as it is known in the Himalayas). But how many people have heard of the flying batwoman of Vietnam, the peiste of the Irish loughs or know the full story of the Minnesota Iceman? You will learn all these things in this book - and consider too whether that creature of legend, the werewolf, may not still be alive and well in Europe today. But we are presenting here something more besides: that is not merely a collection of spine chilling tales and outlandish stories - though many reports of 'unknown' animals are far from reassuring and often very bizarre indeed. What these chapters offer are careful examination of the reports and photographs of the creatures, informed speculations about their nature and origins, and, where appropriate, a discussion of the kind of reality such weird entities may inhabit. For in dealing with some of the more extraordinary of these reports, made by reliable witnesses with no apparent desire for notoriety or profit, there often appears to be no alternative explanation for the events described than some kind of parallel reality, some other dimension, from which these creatures inexplicably and elusively emerge, if ever so briefly, into the light of our world.
