Aldridge Dr. S. SEEING RED AND FEELING BLUE - THE NEW UNDERSTANDING OF MOOD AND EMOTION Arrow Pb 245pp Larger format slight crease on front cover o/w G+ £3.  Anger, stress, depression and crime all seem to be symptoms of the lives we lead today.  Where do they come from? How are they related? How can we deal with them? When anger spills out of control, when we see red, it often finds expression in violence and crime.  Turned inward, it leads to depression, to feeling blue.  The problems fuelled by these extreme shades of mood and emotion are of a compelling interest and importance both to individuals and to society as a whole, where depression and crime appear to be reaching epidemic proportions.  So why is it that some people seem to thrive on stress while it has others reaching for tranquilisers?  This book is a detailed, balanced and comprehensive scientific account of these related phenomena.  Dr Susan Aldridge reveals how we can use the latest insights into the workings of the brain and its chemistry, along with other approaches, to generate more positive solutions to counteract the destructive shades of our strongest emotion.

Barbaric Fr. Slavko IN THE SCHOOL OF LOVE Faith ND Pb Larger format 110pp G+ £3. Christ's new commandment to us was Love One Another. He repeatedly admonished all who came to listen to His words to "love" as the basis for their earthly existence.  He still pleads to His people today for that same special commitment.  Unfortunately, we seem no closer to understanding this new commandment today, than were the people of Jesus' time.  The world, devastated by violence, greed, hatred and pride, is still searching for peace and love.  Medjugorje, in the former country of Yugoslavia, seemed to become an oasis of peace in the early 1980s with the reported apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary.  It also became known as her "School of Love".  The messages, and the interpretations and meditations that resulted, often came from Fr. Slavko Barbaric, associated with the Medjugorje parish of St James over the past ten years.  In this book, "In The School of Love", Fr Barbaric has assembled many of these messages and accompanying meditations into a blueprint for this struggling world and its needs to find peace and love.  Incredibly, these pleas for peace and love from the Mother of our Redeemer provided special local meaning to that region of the world where the outbreak of a terrible war eliminated the country of Yugoslavia and hundreds of thousands of its inhabitants.  The true need for love was never more evident. The author masterfully spells it out in the pages of this book.

Blackmer J. Dexter ACROBATS OF THE GODS - DANCE AND TRANSFORMATION Inner City Books 1989 Pb 115pp b&w photographs G+ £3.50.  Recent years in the Western world have seen an explosion of interest in personal growth, both mental and physical.  Much has been written about the spiritual and psychological aspects of this movement, but little about the meaning of physical development.  This lucid book is written by a woman in the unique position of having trained in both modern dance and the principles of Jungian psychology.  With the heart-felt knowledge of a dancer and the hard-won objectivity of a therapist, she explains how the poles of matter and psyche are connected in a dancer's world.  The authoress's basic thesis is that anyone undergoing a physical training process is working on the material of his or her own being.  Leading us through the rigors of dance training, and relating it to the alchemical opus, she allows us to experience with new understanding the pain and labour that for many gives birth to an enhanced awareness of the Self.  After centuries of belief in the value of repressing physical instincts, here is a timely reminder that without the body there is no soul.

This book covers alternative medicines which comprises all those kinds of treatment that are not taught in recognised medical schools.  They are of many kinds, ranging from the near-orthodox to the frankly bizarre, and about the only feature they have in common is their lack of official recognition.  And even here, the boundary is not clear-cut, for what is "alternative" at one time may become accepted later.  Hypnosis, for example, was once considered completely beyond the pale, but today has all but completed the transition to orthodox acceptance, while acupuncture is beginning the same migration. Fascinating and very informative guide for readers.

Dawkins R. THE SELFISH GENE Oxford University Press 1989 Pb 332pp Larger format Very bottom of pages 3-30 slightly creased o/w GF-VG £3.50.  This book should be read almost as though it were science fiction.  It is designed to appeal to the imagination.  But it is not science fiction: it is science.  Cliche or not, 'stranger than fiction' expresses exactly how the author feels about the truth.  "We are survival machines  ... robot vehicles blindly programmed to preserve the selfish molecules known as genes".  This is a truth which still fills the author with astonishment.  Three imaginary readers looked over the author's shoulder whilst he was writing and he now dedicates the book to them.  First the general reader, the layman, for him I have avoided technical jargon almost totally and where the author had to use specialised words he has defined them.  The author's secondary imaginary reader was the expert.  The author's hope is that the expert will find something new.  The third imaginary reader was the student, making the transition from layman to expert.  If that person has not made up his/her mind what field they want to be expert in, the author hopes to encourage them to give his own field of zoology a second glance.  There is a better reason for studying zoology than its possible 'usefulness' and the general likeableness of animals.  The reason is that we animals are the most complicated and perfectly-designed pieces of machinery in the known universe.  For the student who has already committed himself/herself to zoology, the author hopes the book may have some educational value.  If any students finds the original sources hard to digest, perhaps the author's non-mathematical interpretation may help, as an introduction and adjunct.   There are obvious dangers in trying to appeal to three different kinds of readers.  The author has become very conscious of these dangers but they seemed to be outweighed by the advantages of the attempt.  The author is a ethologist and this is a book about animal behaviour. Ethology has recently been invigorated by an invasion of fresh ideas from sources not conventionally regarded as ethological.  This book is largely based on these new ideas.  Their originators are acknowledged in the appropriate places in the text: the dominant figures are G C Williams, J Maynard Smith, W D Hamilton and R L Trivers.  Marian Dawkins considerable knowledge of the biological literature and her understanding of theoretical issues together with her ceaseless encouragement and moral support has been essential to the author in writing this book and the author has many others that he has consulted in the preparation of this fascinating book.

A devoted mother with a loving family, she embarked on a voyage of discovery, leaving her body and learning "the joy of spiritual freedom". She saw more, perhaps than any other person has seen before and came back with an almost photographic view. She was given a message to share with others that has filled hundreds of thousands of people with hope. Her experiences changed her life forever. Know your Own I.Q. was and is a best seller.  It also provoked a mass critical comment and correspondence.  Some readers claimed that their answers were as good as the accepted solution, while others complained that the book was a test of knowledge as much as intelligence.  A few protested that it was all too easy.  In this sequel. Check your own I.Q., Professor Eysenck provides five new tests of the standard (omnibus) type as a check.  He has also added three specific tests which are designed to sort out whether the reader shows more ability in verbal, numerical, or visual spatial terms.  Those wishing to test themselves seriously are warned not to dip into the questions or answers.
Furlong M. PRAYERS AND POEMS SPCK 2004 Pb 1st Ed 87pp VG £2. The richness of Monica Furlong's experiences and beliefs is beautifully expressed in this collection of her poems and prayers.  Here, strikingly described, are the concerns of a thinking, theological woman in the second half of the twentieth century.  Her words paint vividly the desolation and the joys of childhood; belief in God; the difficulty of developing self-confidence as a woman in church and society; and the bringing together of sexuality and spirituality and of psychology and religion.  Here is a way of faith that lives in love with the ordinary, having known both ecstasy and limitation.  Here also is a healthy contempt for a rigid adherence to traditions within the churches, and to the rules that perpetuate the suffering of others.  Monica Furlong was a broadcaster, biographer, novelist, children's writer, counsellor, theologian and spiritual writer.  She also became a skilled political activist during her time as Moderator of the Movement for the Ordination of Women in the Church of England.

Gear N. THE DIVINE DEMON - A PORTRAIT OF THE MARQUIS DE SADE Frederick Muller Ltd 1963 1st GB Ed Hb 217pp G+ £5. There are particular difficulties in writing a biographical study of Sade.  Much of the material relating to his life and work was destroyed, either in the attack on the Bastille, by the pillaging of his chateau at La Coste, during the revolution, or deliberately by his family after his death as well as during his long periods of imprisonment.  There were also many fantastic accounts of his life which obscured the facts in a mist of Sadeian mythology.  This is the story of the man who wrote the world's most obscene books, who practised himself all the sexual perversions and aberrations he wrote about; who was an atheist in an age when atheists could be burned alive; who passed his adult life in prison; who influenced a generation of novelists and poets, major and minor, who anticipated the work of Freud, Havelock Ellis and Doctor Kinsey; who is the patron saint of surrealist painters and poets; who has been called "monster", "pornographer" and a "great moralist".

Glaskin G.M. WINDOWS OF THE MIND - EXPLORING THE CHRISTOS TECHNIQUES OF MIND TRAVEL Prism 1986 Pb 207pp Larger format Previous owner's stamp on front page o/w G+ £3.50. Have you ever wanted to "travel"? Not by air, sea or land.  But by mind.  In time.  The author is a well-known Australian novelist, came upon a privately published magazine on astral travelling and re-discovering one's previous incarnations (or perhaps, penetrating to the very furthermost corners of one's inner, psychological and spiritual landscape and time-span).  He began to experiment with friends, and journeyed himself to prehistoric Africa.  Others tried it.  Their experiences are gripping wholly unexpected, utterly real.  This book is an account of many of these "journeys".  And it gives detailed instructions on how to "travel" in time and space and identity without losing consciousness of the here-and-now, without drugs, and without hypnosis.  All you need is the ability to relax and two or three friends you can trust to "conduct" you through an experience that could change your life.   This book is now regarded as a classic of parapsychology, this was his first venture into the field of altered states of consciousness.

Harriman S.  THE BOOK OF GINSENG - The ancient users and modern history of the mysterious "Root of Heaven" Pyramid Books 1975 Pb 140pp pages Slightly tanned o/w G £3.  For thousands of years, the people of eastern Asia have used ginseng, a natural remedy that comes from the root of a wild forest herb.  Until recently, modern authorities would not take the therapeutic properties seriously.  However, with the recent emphasis on the natural environment, and the opening of communications between East and West, there appears to be a meeting of the modern scientific mind and traditional wisdom bred of an ancient culture.  Science is regarding the products of nature with new interest.  As research continues, there are indications that nature may have provided what the laboratory could not. This book presents this evidence in understandable terminology.

Humphreys C. BUDDHISM Penquin 1962 Pb Larger format 231pp page ends slightly tanned due to age b&w photographs VG £3. The religion-philosophy known to the West as Buddhism is in number of adherents and range of teaching one of the largest in the world.  Born in India in the sixth century B.C., it became the religion of Ceylon, Siam, Burma and Cambodia, which adhere to the older or Southern School, while the developed Mahayana School is found in various forms in Tibet, Mongolia, China, Korea and Japan.  Its range of thought is equally vast.  It includes the most exalted philosophy yet achieved by man, a psychology from which the West is slowly beginning to learn, a religion which has satisfied untold millions for 2,500 years, a Middle Way of self-development to self-enlightenment and a range and depth of spiritual science, mysticism, and religious art which cannot be found elsewhere.  To compress such a wealth of human thought into a single volume is difficult, but here is not only the history and development of Buddhism and the teaching of the various Schools, but also its condition in the world today.  On Buddhism in the West the author is an expert, having been President of the Buddhist Society, London, for thirty-five years; on world Buddhism he speaks with forty years' experience.  The subject is now of special interest in view of the vast changes that are taking place in Eastern Asia.

Kroon C Van Der THE GOLDEN FOUNTAIN - THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO URINE THERAPY Amethyst 1994 Pb 123pp Larger format Illus Crease to cover o/w G £4. If you plan to practise urine therapy, proceed with caution. It is of the utmost importance that you are aware of how all natural cures work. Natural cures work "from the inside out". Symptoms which have been suppressed, such as through the use of allopathic medication, can temporarily recur. Healing from the inside our causes the body to detoxify, and can cause severe and sometimes unpleasant reactions. It is not recommended to practise urine therapy in combination with the use of allopathetic medicines or recreational drugs. The therapy described in this book is meant for those who are willing to take full responsibility for their own health and healing process, and in doing so dare to trust the power of their own body and being.
Lama Dalai THE UNIVERSE IN A SINGLE ATOM - HOW SCIENCE AND SPIRITUALITY CAN SERVE OUR WORLD Little Brown 2006 Pb 221pp Larger format VG £3.  In this rare, personal investigation, His Holiness the Dalai Lama discusses his vision of science and faith working hand in hand to alleviate human suffering.  Drawing on a lifetime of scientific study and religious practice, he explores many of the great debates and makes astonishing connections between seemingly disparate topics - such as evolution and karma - that will change the way we look at our world.  While he sees science and faith as "complementary but different investigative approaches with the same goal of seeking the truth", the fact that the benefits of opening our hearts and minds to the connections between science and faith are far preferable to perpetuating the divisive rhetoric that often surrounds them.  He believes that such enlightenment is the key to achieving peace within ourselves and throughout the world.  Now, as we face such troubled and uncertain times, there has never been a greater need for this extraordinary man's compassionate thoughts and wise words.

Miller G. H. 10,000 DREAMS INTERPRETED Barnes & Noble 1996 Hb No Dw 282pp Blue boards Small label on front end page Profusely illus in colour & b&w photographs VG £5.  This groundbreaking book stands as a milestone in allegorical dream interpretation.  The author believed that dreams can significantly affect our everyday lives.  He was able to communicate to the average man in non-technical terms what a dream can foretell and he believed that the entries he provided were the keys that would unlock the mysteries of the future.  In creating this book, he has selected dreams and subjects that were considered meaningless, and by using the forces around him he strove to find their esoteric or hidden import.  His intuitive method of decoding dreams was neither mysterious nor formulaie, but purely instinctive and analytic.  This updated, illustrated edition is presented as a celebration of Miller's original text; the construction and vocabulary of his language, his spelling imagery and allusions have all been retained to preserve the unique flavour of the original; only a few words and concepts now considered anachronistic or obsolete are explained in the text.

Morris R. THE EDGES OF SCIENCE - Crossing the Boundary from Physics to Metaphysics. Fourth Estate 1992 Pb 1st GB Ed 223pp Larger format VG+ £4.  The frontiers of science have been pushed so far forward that scientists now regularly ask questions that earlier generations would have considered metaphysical.  Theoretical speculation progresses so rapidly that it often outruns experiment.  Even the nature of scientific experiment has changed: the world at the edges of science is not only a long way removed from the everyday world that we apprehend through our senses, it is a long way removed from the world as seen through scientific instruments.  Ours is a Universe inhabited at its extremities by such exotic entities as cosmic strings, leptons, dark matter and wormholes.  The latest developments in scientific thought are bound to be difficult and puzzling even the scientists disagree amongst themselves.  The author holds a doctorate in physics and has written several books on scientific subjects.
Morse M (with Paul Perry) - (Foreword by Raymond A Moody) CLOSER TO THE LIGHT Bantam 1992 Pb 226pp Pages lightly tanned o/w G+ £3. What happens when we die? Ten years ago Dr Raymond Moody's classic work "Life after Life", offered evidence of near-death experiences which shattered the preconceptions of doctors and lay-people alike.  Now Dr Melvin Morse, a paediatrician and an acknowledged leader in his field of research, presents astonishing scientific proof that near-death experiences are a fact.  Gathered from the testimony of children too young to have absorbed cultural attitudes to death, this book offers evidence that consistently portrays the end of life as serene and joyous, to be welcomed rather than feared, an "experience of Light".  Adults who almost died as children say that the effect of the Light has never left them.  In a book that is both comforting and scientifically meticulous, Dr Morse asks whether children have different near-death experiences from those of adults; whether a particular area of the brain is involved or genetically coded. His answers may change your views about death and dying forever.

Admiral Shattock began his investigation of mind power in order to alleviate and cure physical illness.  To develop this potential we need to use what Admiral Shattock calls "setting up" and "action" tools, designed to increase the energy we put into our thought and therefore widen the field in which the mind will operate.  Some of these tools are well known, such as concentration and visualization, but others will be new to many readers.  In the author's view, the use of the techniques described in this book will allow the individual to tap the immense resources of the intuition, which he believes will progressively take over from the intellect as the conscious source of our knowing.

Soskin J. (Channelled by)  TRANSFORMATION The College of Psychic Studies 1995 Pb 1st Ed Larger format 115pp G+ £3.  An enormous metamorphosis is occurring which is influencing the creation of a new species on Earth.  Humanity is being remade!  This is not some future child that will be born in a distant age - it is happening right now within each of you.  This metamorphosis is accelerating as the changes in energy frequencies coming into the planet have now hit the physical body.  The development of the new human-being will be achieved through your etheric bodies. The soul-mind is being activated and will take over from the intellect; you will awaken to the knowledge within you, and will be able to intuitively link into the higher consciousness states and access information that has not been available to many of you before.  As your crown chakra changes, you will become multi-dimensional.  You will look very similar to the way you look now, but you will not be the same.  This book, the fourth channelled work by Julie Soskin, reveals this enormous shift in our evolution.  It also talks about the global changes which are affecting humanity on all levels, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually - the changes in our food chain and how we can adapt to that - why wars are necessary and their part in the greater picture - how two seemingly contradictory energies, spirit and matter, are coming together and why there is an urgency for us to embrace both forces in our lives - and why it is so important to live from our hearts.

Various HOW TO RELAX AND LIVE LONGER (by the Editors of Prevention magazine) Rodale Press Inc. 1980 Pb 126pp Larger format b&w photographs G £2.  Over a century ago, Thoreau observed that "The mass of men lead lives of quiet desperation".  What Thoreau saw is still here, with one exception, the desperation is no longer quiet.  With as many as four our of five adults suffering from some form of psychiatric aberration (Yorkville Study, 1963), the anxieties of contemporary man are all too apparent.  Stress can best be described as the body's adaptive reaction to a general emergency.  In fact, we need a certain amount of stress to maintain our equanimity.  Astronauts placed in stress-free chambers, void of light, sound, touch and taste, quickly developed the signs of mental breakdown.  The neurologist Sherrington tells us that the lives of all living things from single cell organisms to the complex Homo sapiens cycle through four stages: relaxation, challenge, tension and action to overcome the challenge.  To spend too much time in any one of these phases, even relaxation, will upset the organism.  To illustrate the body's handling of stress, let's imagine you're out on a leisurely Sunday drive.  The mechanics of driving come automatically, so your thoughts are on the beautiful countryside - stage one.  Suddenly the car in front of you stops - phase two.  Your muscles tense up - phase three.  You apply the brakes - stage four.  The emergency, or challenge, was simple and you quickly return to stage one, that of relaxation.  Other challenges are as varied as life itself.  They range from wounds such as a burn or cut, to the thought of losing a job.  They can be pleasurable too.  Trying out a new power mower, or maybe crossing a woodland stream.  They can be pathological or psychological.  They might be of short duration or last much longer.  And they may appear in combinations or even overlap.  Mind and body are so inseparable that every emotional experience you have is also a physical event.  Other headings which the book covers are:  What does Stress Cost? Pantothenate: The "Anti-Stress Vitamin" for Hard Time,  Good Sources of Pantothenate, How to Give a Deep, Tension-Relieving Massage, Letting it "All Hang Out", A Breathing Technique that Stops Anger and Nervousness, A Simple New Way to Fall Asleep Faster, Liver can Protect you against Stress, Running Chases The Blues Away, Vitamin A, Nature's Shield Against Glandular Stress, Friends are your Best Medicine, How to Stop Worrying, Free your body and mind with Folate, How to Hypnotize yourself for Greater Mental and Physical Control, The healing Power of Music, How Noise affects Sleep and your Blood Pressure, How to use your Mind Power for deep relaxation, How to loosen up, your tight aching shoulders, Dolomite can smooth your jagged nerves, Coffee burns up your B Vitamins and scalds your nerves and How Uncle Sam plays nasty games with your nerves.
