| Agnes Mother of Jesus THE STORY OF A SOUL - THE AUTOBIOGRAPHY OF SAINT THERESE OF LISIEUX Burns & Oates 1964 Pb 169pp G £3. This book is made up of three separate manuscripts of unequal length and of individual character, written for three different persons. It must be remembered that the writings of St Therese are not confined to these three manuscripts; her letters, published word for word as she wrote them, form by far the greater part of her literary output, and the portrait of St Therese as revealed in the manuscripts edited by Mother Agnes is identical with the portrait revealed in these letters. As laid down by Canon Law, Therese's writings were examined by a special commission at the time of the introduction of her cause for Beatification, and Canon Dubosq, Promoter of the Faith, later made the following statement with regard to Mother Agnes edition. "We were provided with St Therese's autograph manuscripts and were able to compare them line by line with the published text. Differences seemed few and, as far as historical truth is concerned, of no importance". The recent publication of the unedited manuscripts has thrown fresh light upon the saint's character and personality as revealed through the delicate nuances of her personal style and provided many additional details which help to build up a more vivid and colourful picture of her life. |

| Gear N. THE DIVINE DEMON - A PORTRAIT OF THE MARQUIS DE SADE Frederick Muller Ltd 1963 1st GB Ed Hb 217pp G+ £10. There are particular difficulties in writing a biographical study of Sade. Much of the material relating to his life and work was destroyed, either in the attack on the Bastille, by the pillaging of his chateau at La Coste, during the revolution, or deliberately by his family after his death as well as during his long periods of imprisonment. There were also many fantastic accounts of his life which obscured the facts in a mist of Sadeian mythology. This is the story of the man who wrote the world's most obscene books, who practised himself all the sexual perversions and aberrations he wrote about; who was an atheist in an age when atheists could be burned alive; who passed his adult life in prison; who influenced a generation of novelists and poets, major and minor, who anticipated the work of Freud, Havelock Ellis and Doctor Kinsey; who is the patron saint of surrealist painters and poets; who has been called "monster", "pornographer" and a "great moralist". |

| Harding M. Esther WOMAN'S MYSTERIES - THE INNER LIFE OF WOMEN REVEALED IN RELIGIOUS MYTH AND RITUAL - Rider 1989 1st GB Pb 241 pp Larger Format Slight foxing o/w G-VG £4. This book is a psychological interpretation of the Feminine Principle as portrayed in Myth, Story and Dreams. There is an introduction by C G Jung. As a result of the work of Jung and of other writers such as Frazer we recognise that alchemy, healing, magic and divination for example - as well as the ritual side of religion - are in some way the domain of the Feminine, representing the residue of woman's ancient role in ancient Goddess religions of the past. Moreover, we have come to realise that the male domination of Western culture has led to spiritual aridity. As a corrective, we are as a culture rediscovering the relevance of esoteric and mythic traditions and the Feminine values which these traditions embody. This book originally published some thirty years ago - was one of the first to look seriously at the ancient religions and show that the insights embodied in them express profound and enduring psychological truths. |

The frontiers of science have been pushed so far forward that scientists now regularly ask questions that earlier generations would have considered metaphysical. Theoretical speculation progresses so rapidly that it often outruns experiment. Even the nature of scientific experiment has changed: the world at the edges of science is not only a long way removed from the everyday world that we apprehend through our senses, it is a long way removed from the world as seen through scientific instruments. Ours is a Universe inhabited at its extremities by such exotic entities as cosmic strings, leptons, dark matter and wormholes. The latest developments in scientific thought are bound to be difficult and puzzling even the scientists disagree amongst themselves. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada appeared in this world in 1896 in Calcutta, India. He first met his spiritual master, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Gosvami in Calcutta in 1922. Bhaktivedanta Sarasvati, a prominent religious scholar and the founder of sixty four Gaudiya Mathas (Vedic Institutes), liked this educated young man and convinced him to dedicate his life to teaching Vedic knowledge. Srila Prabhupada became his student, and eleven years later (1933) at Allahabad he became his formally initiated disciple. Recognising Srila Prabhupada's philosophical learning and devotion, the Gaudiya Vaisnava Society honored him in 1947 with the title "Bhaktivedanta". In 1950, at the age of fifty four,Srila Prabhupada retired from married life, adopting the vanaprastha (retired) order to devote more time to his studies and writing. Srila Prabhupada travelled to the holy city of Vrndavana, where he lived in very humble circumstances in the historic medieval temple of Radha-Damodara. There he engaged for several years in deep study and writing. He accepted the renounced order of life (sannyasa) in 1959. At Radha-Damodara, Srila Prabhupada began work on his life's masterpiece. a multi volume translation of and commentary on the eighteen-thousand-verse. After publishing three volumes of the Bhagavatam, Srila Prabhupada came to the United States in 1965, to fulfill the mission of his spiritual master. Subsequently, His Divine Grace wrote more than sixty volumes of authoritative translations, commentaries and summary studies of the philosophical and religious classics of India. In 1968 he created New Vrindaban, an experimental Vedic community in the hills of West Virginia. Inspired by the success of New Vrindaban, now a thriving farm community of more than one thousand acres, his students have since founded several similar communities in the United States and abroad. Srila Prabhupada's most significant contribution, however, is his books. Highly respected by the academic community for their authoritativeness, depth and clarity, they are used as standard textbooks in numerous college courses. His writings have been translated into twenty eight languages. The Bhaktivedanta Book Trust, established in 1972 exclusively to publish the works of His Divine Grace, has become the world's largest publisher of books in the field of Indian religion and philosophy. |
